Matt Tait (@mctait) of the Lawrence Journal World reports there is no buyout clause in the contract of first-year Kansas coach Turner Gill. The Jayhawks are 2-4 and an 0-2 in conference play, having been outscored 114-14 by Baylor and Texas A&M. That has reportedly already drawn the ire of some circles of KU fans. Even if KU wanted to fire Gill after this season, it would owe the remaining $8M on Gill’s 5-year, $10M contract that was signed by recently resigned athletic director Lew Perkins.

NBCSports.com’s Ben Kercheval writes that the hiring of first-year Kansas coach Turner Gill is causing some second guessing. KU is 2-4 with a season-opening loss to North Dakota State, a road loss at Southern Miss and now back-to-back defeats at Baylor (55-7) and home vs. Kansas State (59-7). Kercheval notes that success is not a distant memory for Kansas, which beat Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl under coach Mark Mangino.

Complicating matters in Lawrence is that the athletic director situation is in flux. Lew Perkins, who hired Gill, abrupted resigned, nearly 12 months before his scheduled retirement date and Sean Lester is serving as interim athletic director.
