Sources have told NCAA Rumor Mill that Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi will hold a 2pm CT press conference on Monday to introduce Jerry Kill as the Golden Gophers’ new head football coach.

The 49-year old Kill has served as the head coach at Northern Illinois since 2008. He led the Huskies to the MAC Championship Game this season and a top-25 ranking. Kill has gone 23-16 in his three years in DeKalb, including an 18-6 mark in the MAC.

Prior his tenure at NIU, Kill spent seven years at Southern Illinois, where he turned the Salukis into an NCAA FCS power.  After going 1-10 in his first year in Carbondale in 2001, the Salukis made the NCAA FCS playoffs five times and made it to the semifinals in 2007.  Kill was named the I-AA Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2007.

Kill will replace Tim Brewster at Minnesota.  Other candidates rumored to be connected to the Minnesota job were Al Golden, Randy Edsall, Marc Trestman and many others.

Kill has battled kidney cancer since 2005, and has created the Coach Kill Cancer Fund to assist low-income families who are dealing with cancer.

Dennis Brackin of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that Minnesota is still paying $5.2M in buyout costs associated with the firings of former basketball coach Dan Monson and football coach Glen Mason.

The article also notes the buyouts for some oft-mentioned coaches:

• Brady Hoke (San Diego State): $1.5 million until Dec. 15, when it drops to $1 million.

• Al Golden (Temple): at least $2 million, according to published reports.

• Randy Edsall (Connecticut): $500,000 buyout.

• Dan Mullen (Mississippi State): believed to have a buyout similar to Edsall; Mississippi State officials have not complied with a request for Mullen’s contract.

• Kevin Sumlin (Houston): $600,000

• Troy Calhoun (Air Force): $565,000

• Larry Fedora (Southern Mississippi) $400,000 to $500,000

Doogie Wolfson of @1500ESPN in Minneapolis has compiled a list of 30 potential replacements for Minnesota coach Tim Brewster if/when he is relieved of his duties. I would generously describe this as a brainstorm session and not even close to a realistic list of candidates. Many of them seem to make no sense at all, but nonetheless, it seems obvious that Minnesota will make a move sometime between today and Nov. 27, so here we go:

Minnesota grad, Tony Dungy, Georgia coach Mark Richt, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, Boise State coach Chris Petersen, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, Temple coach Al Golden, UConn coach Randy Edsall, UFL coach and former Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski, San Diego State coach Brady Hoke, former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, former Kansas coach Mark Mangino, former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, former USF coach Jim Leavitt, former Oregon coach Mike Belloti, Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, Columbia coach and Minnesota grad Norries Wilson, former Minnesota QB and Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman, Ole Miss OC and Minnesota native Mike Markuson, Vikings OC Darrell Bevell, Ravens QB coach and former Minnesota assistant Jim Zorn, former Ravens coach and former Vikings OC Brian Billick, Wisconsin OC Paul Chryst, Alabama DC Kirby Smart, Alabama OC Jim McElwin, Nebraska DC Carl Pelini, Oklahoma DC Brent Venables, Michigan State OC Don Tradwell, Oklahoma OC Kevin Wilson, Florida assistant and former Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney and Clemson DC and former Baylor coach Kevin Steele.
