Minnesota grad Tony Dungy has endorsed Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman for the position recently vacated by Tim Brewster, writes Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette. Trestman played quarterback for the Gophers and graduated high school in the Minneapolis area.

Alouettes president Larry Smith expected Trestman to fulfill his contract, which is in place for the next two seasons.

“He’s going to be here until the end of 2012. Period,” Alouettes president Larry Smith said last Monday — one day after Trestman’s name surfaced around an opening at the University of Minnesota. “When Marc came here, he was in a state of flux and wanted security. We gave him that security.

“He has got a contract and we expect him to honour it.”

The Associated Press reports that Tony Dungy, who played quarterback collegiately at Minnesota, is not interested in becoming the coach at his alma mater.

Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi says he contacted Dungy after firing coach Tim Brewster on Sunday. Maturi says Dungy told him he doesn’t want to get back into coaching, but added that Dungy offered to help the school find a suitable replacement for Brewster.

Doogie Wolfson of @1500ESPN in Minneapolis has compiled a list of 30 potential replacements for Minnesota coach Tim Brewster if/when he is relieved of his duties. I would generously describe this as a brainstorm session and not even close to a realistic list of candidates. Many of them seem to make no sense at all, but nonetheless, it seems obvious that Minnesota will make a move sometime between today and Nov. 27, so here we go:

Minnesota grad, Tony Dungy, Georgia coach Mark Richt, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, Boise State coach Chris Petersen, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, Temple coach Al Golden, UConn coach Randy Edsall, UFL coach and former Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski, San Diego State coach Brady Hoke, former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, former Kansas coach Mark Mangino, former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, former USF coach Jim Leavitt, former Oregon coach Mike Belloti, Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, Columbia coach and Minnesota grad Norries Wilson, former Minnesota QB and Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman, Ole Miss OC and Minnesota native Mike Markuson, Vikings OC Darrell Bevell, Ravens QB coach and former Minnesota assistant Jim Zorn, former Ravens coach and former Vikings OC Brian Billick, Wisconsin OC Paul Chryst, Alabama DC Kirby Smart, Alabama OC Jim McElwin, Nebraska DC Carl Pelini, Oklahoma DC Brent Venables, Michigan State OC Don Tradwell, Oklahoma OC Kevin Wilson, Florida assistant and former Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney and Clemson DC and former Baylor coach Kevin Steele.
